The year was 1883 and a major event in the history of mining in Australia when the first mining lease was pegged out in Broken Hill. Charles Rasp, a boundary rider on the Mount Gipps Station came across what he first thought to be tin oxide but to his surprise and to the fellow syndicate of seven they had stumbled across one of the world’s richest ore bodies.
